The IFS model was developed by psychotherapist, author, and academic Richard Schwartz Ph.D., and it has grown into one of the more widely practised approaches in therapy today. This is an introduction to this therapeutic lens.

Wondering if it fits you?

You are made up of parts, and that is completely natural.

Think about the last time you felt two things at once. You are at a birthday party, and part of you is happy to be there while another part is quietly worn out and wishing you were home. Neither part is wrong. Both are real, and both are yours.

That is the starting point of IFS. Rather than treating yourself as one single voice that ought to be consistent, it takes seriously that you are more like an inner family: a collection of parts, each with its own worry, its own job, its own way of trying to help.

Most of us have never been invited to see ourselves this way, and it can feel strange at first, or even "woo woo", but it does not mean anything is wrong. It is simply a more honest way of viewing your experience and is a map of how a mind actually works.

What is Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a way of getting to know your parts instead of fighting them. The ones causing the most trouble, the anxious one, the critic, the one that shuts down, are often parts working hardest to protect you from something. When you can turn toward them with curiosity rather than judgment, they soften and allow space for a steadier version of you that has been there all along.

That's the work. Slower than you might expect, and gentler. Less about pushing through and more about clarity and understanding, so the parts of you that have been carrying too much can finally set some of it down.

Parts work therapy in Kelowna

“Parts work” is the plain-language name many people use for Internal Family Systems. If you've heard someone talk about an anxious part or an inner critic, they were describing this way of working. One part of you wants to speak up while another keeps you quiet, and each is trying to help in its own way. Parts work therapy gives both of them room to be heard instead of argued with.

In a session, we slow down and get to know whichever part is most active at the moment. You might notice what it's worried about and how long it has been doing its job. Nobody forces it to change. As it becomes feeling more understood, it usually softens enough to show you just what it has been protecting.

Online IFS therapy across BC

If you live elsewhere in BC, or getting to an office is hard, sessions run by secure video. Online IFS therapy works much the same way, and some people find it easier to turn inward from their own living room. You can switch between in person and online whenever you need to.

Is IFS right for me?

You are a good candidate for IFS if you are curious about understanding yourself, or at least open to trying on the idea that you are made of parts. You do not have to be sold on the whole framework before you begin. Plenty of people arrive uncertain, feel a bit of it work, and go from there.

It may not be the right fit if what you want is purely a fast, symptom by symptom fix with none of the exploring.
